Theology Turned to Praise

4: 20 "Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen."

Paul’s reflection in v.10-18 on the gift sent by the Philippians leads him to theology in v.19. And his meditation on theology leads him to praise in v.20.

This ought to be the regular pattern of our minds. When something happens to us in our lives, it ought to turn our attention to God’s hand behind it (for His hand is behind all things - for the good of those who love Him). Then, our contemplation of God’s activity ought to lead us to praise. That’s what it’s all about. As Paul says in Eph.1:12, we exist for "the praise of His glory."

What is happening to us in ’the real world’ is that God is lavishing His grace upon us every day through provisions, protections, and also through sufferings and hardships, which are not meant to punish us or embitter us but rather to discipline us in love. But we KNOW that if we are in Christ it is ALL for our best, and that even what sometimes tastes bitter is precious and much-needed medicine.

A gift from some friends led Paul to contemplate the riches of God’s grace and then to worship. O beloved in Christ, let the circumstances you face lead you to contemplate God’s hand in your life, and then carry it on to praise and worship the One who tenderly administers His good will in your life. Circumstance to theology to praise. It is the path of faith and godliness. Make it your path today.

O Father, forgive me for misinterpreting the circumstances of my life. Forgive me for failing to recognize Your goodness in my daily provision, my daily protection, and even my daily difficulties. May my response to the circumstances You have ordained in my life be what it should be: remembering Your sovereign hand of love and then worshiping and praising You for it. Please open my eyes to see Your work in the circumstances of my life. Help me to live to the praise of Your glorious grace.
