One Thing

3:13-14 One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Sometimes life seems so complicated. There are so many things we are responsible for. But actually in the end God only requires one thing of His people. Paul found this one thing and gave his whole attention to it.

"Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matt.6:33)

Like the people Jesus was addressing in Matt.6, it is easy for me to take responsibility for things God says He will do. God says, "Your job will be to seek Me. My job will be to take care of you." I end up doing His job instead of mine.

So often I am up to my eyeballs in Christian activities, and yet I am not really seeking Him. In my heart I am not being still and knowing that He is God.

Remember Mary and Martha when Jesus was at their house. Martha was scurrying around preparing the meal while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened. After a while Martha spoke to Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” Do you remember Christ’s response? “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:38ff.)

Would Jesus say to us, “You are worried and upset about so many things, but really only one thing is needed”?

We must never put activity at the center of our lives, even if it is good activity. Our work and our service are not enough. He wants our heart, He wants our affection, He wants our allegiance, He wants our full attention and submission. The thing He cares about more than anything, and the thing from which everything else flows is: seeking after Christ in our hearts.

"One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple." (Ps.27:4)

Let these words reverberate in my mind, Lord. Tie them around my fingers and write them on the door posts of my life: ONLY ONE THING IS NEEDED!! Forgive me for my fretting and for my failure to trust You. Help me, Lord, to rest. Help me to lay my burdens down at Your feet. Help me seek only You. Help me to be still and know that You are God. Help me to sit at Your feet and give my whole attention to You.
