The Light of the Gospel of the Glory of God in the Face of Christ (4:4,6)

4:3-6 "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL OF THE GLORY OF CHRIST, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give THE LIGHT OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GLORY OF GOD IN THE FACE OF CHRIST."

There are many beautiful things in God’s world, and He has blessed us with eyes to see and enjoy them. Snow-covered mountains, dazzling sunsets, crashing waves, cascading waterfalls, starlit night skies, magnificent autumn foliage, and spectacular flowers are just a few of the things God places around us for us to see. They are all designed, of course, to show us His glory:

"The whole earth is full of His glory!" (Isaiah 6:3)

But there is one thing more glorious and more radiant than anything else. There is one place where the glory of God gleams more resplendently than any other. It is the face of our blessed Savior Jesus Christ.

The glory of His face was largely hidden, of course, while he walked upon the earth (though a few got a glimpse of it on the Mount of Transfiguration). But a day is coming when all men will behold His face -- and melt.

For now, many remain blinded and unable to see Him. But God is enabling some to see His face -- not with their eyes but in their hearts (i.e. by faith):

"For God, who said, ’Light shall shine out of darkness,’ is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ." (4:6)

Jesus said:

"I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." (John 8:12)

Fair are the meadows,
Fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine,
Fairer still the moonlight
And all the twinkling, starry host; Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.

Fairest Lord Jesus,
Ruler of all nature,
O Thou of God and man the Son;
Thee will I cherish,
Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.

(Munster Gesangbuch, 1677)

Beautiful Savior, Lord of creation, all the glory of God shines in You and yet You have veiled Your light in human flesh, for our sakes choosing to wear a mortal form and bear a mortal pain. Now You dwell in Your Father’s light, waiting for the day when Your glory will be manifested fully to mankind. What a glorious day that will be! Come, Lord, Jesus, come! May Your Kingdom come! But until that day, enlighten my eyes through the Holy Spirit that I may see Your light in my heart and be transformed more and more into Your likeness.
