You Are Our Letter

3:2-3 "You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts."

Because the opponents of Paul who were having influence in the Corinthian church were criticizing him because he did not carry any letters of commendation from respected church leaders, Paul tells the Corinthians that they are his letter of commendation, written by Christ Himself by means of the Holy Spirit upon their hearts (and lives). Their transformed hearts under the ministry of Paul are the evidence that his ministry is genuinely of the Lord.

This has powerful implications for us. Our hearts and lives are also letters that Christ has written. They bear testimony to the power of Christ’s grace, to the mighty sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God), to the wonder-working power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives of selfishness and vileness into lives of joy and love. Our changed hearts and lives are the miracles that point others to God.

It is true: you are the only epistle some folks will ever read. If there is no evidence that can be derived from our lives that Christ is real and powerful, what will motivate the unbeliever to look any farther? Our lives are supposed to make the non-believer stop and ask: "What is the reason for the hope you have within you?" (1Pet.3:15). If my life is so filled with me that Christ goes unnoticed, I have lost my witness and maybe even undermined my reasons for assurance. If our life is explainable by merely human factors, then why would anyone be forced to look to God to explain why we are the way we are?

O Father, I want to be a trophy of Your grace. I want to be a testament of Your mighty power. Fill me with resurrection power in the midst of this life of struggle and suffering so that those who observe me might see that only Your power can explain why I am the way I am.
